Manufactured housing is a critical source of affordable homeownership in the United States. Of the 6.8 million manufactured homes in this country, we estimate that approximately 43% are located in the nation’s 50,000 manufactured home communities, where residents rent the land beneath their homes. This can be a precarious arrangement for many homeowners, but strategies like resident ownership—in which homeowners form cooperatives to purchase their communities—can providemore secure land tenure for millions of American families.
